Interview with Bassist, Derek Lester

By: Lucy Hall

Derek Lester Recording in the Studio
Bluesy, southern, hard rocking and humanitarian that's Blind Peace. The group's brand of gritty, blues infused southern rock is full of high energy boogie sounds that are reminiscent of 70's and 80's rock radio hits. However, the group never seemed to intentionally follow any particular trends but they definitely appeared to have been making their own.
Blind Peace songs such as “Lonesome”, “Walkin Shoes”, and “999” are good mixes of a new 80’s sound and classic rock. The lyrics eulogize values, ambition, family ties, and life-long struggles of the southern working class. The group’s efforts to generate awareness to cancer are commendable. Blind Peace has donated a percentage of their income to cancer research in dedication to frontman Tony Sell's wife who passed away from the disease.
Blind Peace appeared to be such a hard working group who made tremendous efforts to engage their audience and connect with them. You could find them after performing in the lobby meeting and greeting their fans. It was evident that they loved to see their audience jump and scream, and look like they are having a good time. When I meet bass player, Derek Lester, Blind Peace was playing alongside solo artist Tom Keifer formerly of Cinderella. Derek was professional, open and friendly.

Derek started playing music at the young age of thirteen. He has been heavily influenced by an array of 70's and 80's rock genres which include AOR, southern rock, hard rock, and NWOBHM. He joined his first band Kandi at fourteen and it was around this time that he was in a near fatal car accident. He suffered numerous serious injuries. In particular the crash nearly destroyed his left hand, and medical professionals even considered amputating his arm up to the elbow. Yet, Derek would persevere taking rehab to eventually be able to use his left hand to play music again. Most people would become discouraged by such a setback but not Derek who only became more dedicated to his music. He went on to play in heavier bands such as Street Legal and Crystal Witch. He later joined a southern rock band called Off Road and began to write originals.
Derek moved to Nashville and played professionally for a few years but eventually come back to Kentucky. He joined Borrowed Blue a then rock group who went on to find success in country music. In 2013 he joined Blind Peace remaining with the group for five years until deciding to leave the group to concentrate on solo efforts.

During Derek's time with the group he wrote several original songs which included the award winning song, "Rebel Son" which won the Best Hard Rock Ballad for April 2015 from the Akedemia in Los Angeles. The track's narrative is told from the perspective of a Civil War Solider. It was Derek's way of telling his dearly loved grandparents that he was leaving home.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Derek Lester:

HEAVY MAKEUP: Tell us a little bit about Blind Peace. How did you guys meet and how did the group form?

Derek Lester: Tony formed Blind Peace and had a couple of different lineups. Tony and I were put in touch through a mutual friend and that combination just clicked. After a few more lineup changes, the lineup became pretty solid and in place with Tony Sell-guitar, Derek Lester-bass, Eric Manos-drums, JW Gregory-guitar, and Jazz Sell-vocals. This was a solid kick-ass lineup.

HEAVY MAKEUP: What are your musical influences?

Derek Lester: My Musical influences are from everywhere! They range from southern gospel to NWOBHM.  I am a rock guy at heart though. I love classic music of all genres. The 70's and 80's produced the best music ever in my opinion. Regardless of what genre you like, that time period produced the best of it. Country, r&b, rock, pop, and all of it was better. My music is a range of what I love and I actually write several styles. Rock, metal to classic country and I try to write what I hear and hopefully someone else will enjoy it as well.

HEAVY MAKEUP: How would you describe Blind Peace's music, image and overall concept? How does that compare to your individual style?

Derek Lester: Blind Peace's music certainly pulls from all the influences but the common theme is good time rock and roll. The image is the same. We want to have a good time and we want the crowd to have a good time as well. Blind Peace was a band that wanted to make folks feel good. We wanted to celebrate life because, as we all know, it's way too short. Let's celebrate and enjoy! I am a rock and roll guy. That's where my heart is and I never think about being categorized. Sometimes I write stuff that's a lot different than most folks would associate with me. Music that is real and from the soul is great music regardless of genre.

HEAVY MAKEUP: Do you object to being grouped with specific musical genres?

Derek Lester: I am all about rock and roll. I don't think that my music fits into any subcategories other than rock and roll, but if folks feel like they need to categorize then so be it. It's not something that I really think about or worry about. '

HEAVY MAKEUP: Concerning your lyrics are there any major themes expressed?

Derek Lester: The lyrics are pretty straightforward. I don't really think about lyrics other than I want to tell a story and be pretty clear.

HEAVY MAKEUP: You have been pretty busy lately writing and recording music, what can you tell us about the material?

Derek Lester: Blind Peace had recently finished recording four songs at Groovehouse Studios in Friendsville Tennessee with Steve Rutledge of Groovehouse Music Group, who is also producing the record along with Bryan Wayne Perry of Perry Management Group. If you like good ole fashioned kick-ass rock and roll then these tunes will be something you enjoy. Straight ahead rock and roll with a touch of dirty blues! Before I left Blind Peace, we had started recording and, of course, now some things will have to be changed but those songs are gonna be released sometime in the future.

HEAVY MAKEUP: What could fans have expected to see at a Blind Peace show when you were a member?

Derek Lester: At the Blind Peace shows you could have expected to get a generation spanning wide array of music. We were a rock and roll tribute band. We played original music mixed with classic rock and roll cover songs. We wanted everyone to have fun and enjoy the ride. Just come and hang out. We want to meet everyone at the shows and make new friends. That's the truth and we want to meet everyone we can. If you come to a Blind Peace show or any of my performances, please come say hello and chat with me.

HEAVY MAKEUP: What does the future look like for Derek Lester?

Derek Lester: I have decided to kind of be a "free agent". I am looking to play as much as possible and hopefully record and perform as much as I can. I plan on getting a project together in the future but right now I just want to play and create music with whomever will have me. I have been blessed to have played with some great musicians and performers and hopefully can continue to do so.  If anyone needs a bass player for a live show or recording, I come with lots of experience and a pro attitude and pro gear. I want to make the song better and play for the song. I hope that folks will give me a shout when they need a bass player and I look forward to working with everyone that I can. I also plan on writing and recording more Derek Lester stuff and I hope that people will dig it. I have some different stuff on my YouTube channel not a lot of content right now but hopefully that will change soon. I am blessed to be endorsed by Apex Strings, Gamma Custom Basses, Fireplant Guitars, GMF Music, Galaxy Audio, and Dirtbag Clothing. These companies have been a huge boost for my playing and my social media presence. These are great companies with great products and staff.

Derek Lester's signature bare knuckled voice, rowdy stage antics, and hard hammering bass make him a perennial bad-ass. He is currently working on solo projects and often sits in sessions with the group Raised on Dirt.

Retrospective and Interview with the Melodic Rebel Rocker, Jesse Damon:

By: Lucy Hall

The Sunset Strip proved to be an incredible place to live out adolescent fantasies of rock and roll during the decade of glam. Indeed the L.A. club scene provided a perfect place to roam for a young Southern Californian vocalist/musician, whose voice once heard, could never be forgotten. Jesse Damon prior to joining the high powered hard rock outfit, Silent Rage; picked up a guitar at age eight. Heavily influenced by 70’s rock gods, Jesse developed a passion for music and his own brand of solo playing and songwriting styles. Jesse spent his youth toying with the idea of music as a career. During high school he became even more serious about his love of music and found two rebellious young rockers like himself EJ Curse and Mark Hawkins, thus forming the band, Rage. The group later changed their name to Silent Rage and spent time paying their rock and roll dues as an opening act. Soon the band forged a name for themselves as competent headliners.

Silent Rage Promotional Photo
Silent Rage debuted with "Make It or Break It" on Pure Rock Presents 10 Best from the West compilation. Which caught the attention of producer/guitarist Paul Sabu who produced their debut album, Shattered Hearts, one of the most creative and impressive releases of 1987. The same year the band also had a single on the motion picture soundtrack for the comedy, Million Dollar Mystery.  During a time in rock history when glam metal projected the debauched lifestyle of flashy clothing, makeup, parties, groupies, and glossy pop-influenced hooks and riffs; Silent Rage seemed to possess much more substance than the average pop-tinted hard rock of the 1980s.  Rage’s signature style of melodic hard rock and sophistication at the time quickly garnered music mogul, Gene Simmons’ consideration. Which led to Simmons’ self - titled label, a subsidiary of RCA Records producing Rage’s sophomore album, Don't Touch Me There. The album spawned the rock video "Rebel with a Cause", which had heavy rotation on MTV's hard rock/metal programming, Hard 60 and Headbangers Ball.  Preceding the second album, Silent Rage disbanded to work on solo projects but since has had several reunions. In 2002, the band reformed and released Still Alive. In 2008 Silent Rage signed a deal with Frontiers Records for their fourth album, Four Letter Word. The album was produced by Gilby Clarke who also performed on the album. In 2009 the band recorded a bonus track, “Sole Survivor” for the re-mastered, Shattered Hearts album.
Silent Rage Album, Four Letter Word
Jesse went on to prove that he was much more than just the front man of a popular melodic hard rock act. His innovative songwriting, vocals, and hard rocking guitar skills were far more refined than your average glam rocker. He went on to devote himself to his successful solo career. Jesse continued his ability to produce infectious songs combining hard rock melodic songs and powerful ballads on his first few solo efforts. Although his love for the blues, classic rock and country has always been evident; Jesse started to redefine his sound which became more southern blues and country-oriented in his later recordings. But at the same time, he appeared to be getting back to his musical rock roots by incorporating both electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, and lots of harmonies which he has always been known for.

Jesse Damon Album, Temptation in the Garden of Eve
During the early 90s, Jesse continued his musical partnership with Gene Simmons and wrote & performed with Kiss. He performed on both KISS albums Hot In The Shade and Revenge. Jesse’s work co-writing with Simmons’ on Revenge earned him a gold album reward. In 2002 Jesse released his first solo album, The Hand That Rocks. The album contained a track written with Gene Simmons entitled "Everybody Loves Somebody ", and also saw Paul Sabu in production who Jesse would continue to work with throughout his career. Later on, Jesse worked on songs for the albums Carnival Of Souls and Psycho Circus. Silent Rage was credited for performing on Simmon’s Sex Money KISS release and on the 2001 KISS Box Set

Heavy Makeup recently had the privilege of catching up with Jesse Damon to talk about his passion for music and his upcoming album:

HEAVY MAKEUP: You started playing guitar as a child. Who initially influenced you to start playing? Was your family influential? As you grew older what bands inspired your hard rocking guitar performances?

Jesse Damon: In the 1960's, I first started to listen to The Beatles and Elvis Presley along with The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix. This was my first experience hearing rock and roll. As I grew older these are the bands that inspired me to experience my own hard rocking guitar performances Led Zeppelin, Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, Deep Purple, UFO, Blue Oyster Cult, Lynrd Skynrd, Black Sabbath, KISS, The Scorpions and Johnny Winter Band to name a few, but believe me when I say there were a lot more...

HEAVY MAKEUP: You don't seem to conform to any one style. You seem to make music for yourself, you enjoy your work that has remained constant, and you are passionate about it. Am I right in that assumption?

Jesse Damon: I think so. I do follow my heart in writing songs, but what I've learned through the years makes me who I am today. I've carried that with me through life and it's my own style I draw from now. I always want to grow as an artist and have written many songs for rock, pop, country, southern rock, and blues. I've also collaborated with other artists and bands over the years.
HEAVY MAKEUP: Your musical style has ranged from hard rock and blues to southern rock and outlaw country. Concerning the country music aspects, what's the attraction there?
Jesse Damon: I have always liked country music and early on I listened to Johnny Cash, Glen Campbell, Charlie Rich, The Highwaymen, and others. When I started to perform my influences turned to Southern rock with such artists as The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet and 38 Special. More recently it went to Brad Paisley and Keith Urban who are great singer-songwriters and guitar players.
HEAVY MAKEUP: You began writing songs at an early age. What can you tell us about your writing process? How do you harness your lyrical inspiration?
Jesse Damon: I usually come up with a good title or phrase that I feel warrants exploring and giving it a try to become a song. A lot of times I write a guitar riff or rhythm and that starts off an idea. When I write the music first I'll then come up with a lyric that fits the mood of the new guitar riff or rhythm. Vice versa if I write a story or a verse lyric or chorus lyric, I  want to compose the proper mood for that story or lyrics.
HEAVY MAKEUP: You started your band Rage in high school. How did the band Silent Rage develop? Did you meet your bandmates while attending school?
Jesse Damon: Yes, it was in High School that I first met Mark Hawkins, and then Mark introduced me to EJ Curse. The three of us are the original lineup from Rage (1976 to 1984) and then eventually became Silent Rage (1985 to present). We've performed for over forty years together. All the drummers that we've had in both line-ups have been great players and great friends over the years. They're all a part of the Rage family.
HEAVY MAKEUP: As a quintessential popular 80's band, how did Silent Rage set themselves apart from their Sunset Strip peers?
Jesse Damon: I think it was our sound. We didn't sound like the average Sunset Strip bands, we all sang in our band, and played an instrument at the same time. We loved to sing harmonies. Mark, EJ and I were all lead vocalists, each one of us a bit different in style. We were influenced by legendary bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, KISS, Alice Cooper, bands that were bombastic! Also, bands that had images and were dramatic. A lot of other bands during the sunset strip days had a frontman lead singer and some didn’t even have backing vocals. But some did and we were in it to entertain and put on a show. We took every aspect of being a band seriously!
HEAVY MAKEUP: There aren't many musicians from the 80's glam scene who surpassed the Sunset Strip image and attitude. What has kept you on track?
Jesse Damon: The attitude of coming from a special time in rock music and being a part of the Sunset Strip era, and having been on featured on MTV, and what followed. Also, we experienced recording our songs and performing a lot of concerts and shows through that time all the way up until now. If what you are asking is do we still try to be and look like we were back in the 80's that just isn't so. We are older and look a bit different. Our hair isn't as long, and we don't live in leather pants and torn up T-Shirts anymore, at least not every day, Hahaha...
HEAVY MAKEUP: There haven’t been many bands who have continued to perform together or even have remained friends after so many years. What has been the secret to Silent Rage’s longevity? Have there been any current reunion plans?
Jesse Damon: We are lifelong friends and through all our history together we’ve become brothers and family. Respect, kindness and caring for each other are what keeps friends and relationships intact and so we are still intact. No current reunion plans right now, but next year in 2019 that will be the Don’t Touch Me There, album’s 30th Year Anniversary. I’m hoping to do some live dates as well as see what offers come in from promoters and labels around the world!
HEAVY MAKEUP:  You have maintained a well crafted melodic solo career. You were the charismatic frontman of a successful hard rock group, and you have collaborated with some of the world’s most iconic rock stars. Is there any particular period of your career where you think those were the best days I ever had?
Jesse Damon: Getting signed to a major label was a milestone in our band history, as well as touring with Black Sabbath. In the early nineties, I got the opportunity to co-write with Gene Simmons for new KISS material, as well as sing backing vocals on demos and on the KISS Revenge album in 1990-1992. In 1991 Silent Rage were guests at a premiere party for the launch of Sammy Hagar's Red Rocker Clothing-line and we were asked by Sammy Hagar to perform with him a hand full of his songs, and of course, we did and had a ball! There are many more stories through the years, but there's a couple for you!
HEAVY MAKEUP: In 1988 Silent Rage was signed by Simmons Records/RCA Records label. Was that your initial encounter with rock legend Gene Simmons? How did the band catch the business mogul’s eye?
Jesse Damon: We had been searching for management and got an opportunity to perform an audition for Howard Marks of Glickman & Marks Management for KISS publicity management team. Howard flew out to Los Angles to see us perform and liked our band. He said he knew Gene was starting his own custom record label and that he'd send Gene our album. The initial encounter came by way of a phone call from Gene to us. He called to inquire about Silent Rage and wanted to get information and answers to some questions he had. We eventually had a conference call set up between Gene and our band. I think that by Howard Marks sending Gene our album was a big catalyst to us eventually meeting and talking to Gene, but it was our album sound and band look that Gene told us he liked and was interested in signing us.
HEAVY MAKEUP: Can you describe what it was like having a business deal with Gene?
Jesse Damon: It was a BIG deal, and very important to us to have someone such as Gene Simmons to help launch us and believe in us. He gave us a lot of information and insight about the music business, and we got a lot of good advice.
HEAVY MAKEUP: You went on to form a friendship with Gene and to collaborate on other projects with him. During the 90's you landed a Gold record for co-writing with him on the Kiss Revenge LP. What was that like? What leads to these collaborations? What has been your favorite memory of working with Gene?
Jesse Damon: First it was the culmination of getting asked to come into the recording studio to help sing background vocals for song demo’s he was recording. Then Gene had asked Silent Rage to demo the music to some of his new songs. He was very busy and if his schedule didn’t always have the time to record a new song himself, so he’d ask us to do it at our studio. He then asked me if I like to co-write some songs with him and I said yes. We would show each other new riffs on the guitar and go back and forth working it all out, sometimes changing parts and normal stuff you do while writing and composing. I came prepared with some guitar riffs and rhythms and he had his own. We came up with some parts for possible verse and chorus ideas and went from there. Writing songs was definitely a favorite memory and a fun experience!
HEAVY MAKEUP: How did you get involved with the Kiss Konventions?
Jesse Damon:  I was contacted by some of the KISS Convention Promoters and I also contacted some from my end. I performed with my Jesse Damon Solo Band at the New York Kiss Convention in 2003 and at Nottingham, England KISS & Hard Rock Convention in 2005 and a few others after that. I attended the first KISS Convention in 1993 in North Hollywood at the Universal Sheraton Universal Studios. KISS appeared and answered a Q&A session, and did an unplugged jam. Peter Criss was in attendance and ended up on stage with KISS. I spoke with Gene there and was excited to be in attendance checking out all the exhibits, merch, KISS costumes, KISS Instruments encased in glass cases, it was fun and I was there with EJ Curse (Silent Rage bassist) and we talked with so many people. We were in rock wonderland.
HEAVY MAKEUP: You have co-written and recorded with acclaimed AOR producer/musician, Paul Sabu on several projects. How would you compare your current album with previous recording experiences?
Jesse Damon: We haven't started yet but from talks I've had with Paul we both want to go the extra mile and make something very special, putting in a 1000%!! I want this to be my best effort to date! We started to record in July 2018.
HEAVY MAKEUP: I’m very intrigued by Electric Caravan. What can you tell us about the trio and what’s next for the band?
Jesse Damon: This is a labor of love project. It came together with two old friends of mine of whom we all have supported each other's bands, projects and artistry from the past and now we have finally formed a band together to have fun and jam. I write the material for the band and we are mainly a blues based rock n roll, with some southern flavors and hard rock interjection. We will be performing some live dates through the rest of 2018.
HEAVY MAKEUP: Your album is scheduled to launch on the date of July 4th. How does this album differ from your past? Is there significance to launching it on the 4th of July? What can fans expect? Will the music make us see fireworks?
Jesse Damon: To be clear, I plan to begin recording my next solo album in July 2018 with Paul Sabu producing once again! Brand new songs are how it will differ. I plan to record some of the songs geared for a soundtrack, meaning a lot of tracks for a “Big” sound, but always it should be the songs content, songwriting, arrangement, and composition that is the star. I think some fireworks will go off in the minds of the listener. But seriously, I am going to record all this new material the best I can and completely go for it pulling out all the stops. I want to push it to the limit!

HEAVY MAKEUP: Can you single some songs as far as sound or subject matter that is special to you?
Jesse Damon: Any of the past ballads I’ve recorded are always special to me because ballads, in general, are personal and tell a personal story. They’re also emotional. I always loved the song “Tonight You’re Mine” by Silent Rage. Most recently off my Temptation in the Garden of Eve album I love “Save the World” and “Angel in the Starlight.”  I wrote Angel for my Dad that passed. I also have to mention “Wishing Well” and “A Chance for Us” two other songs off that album that hold a lot of emotion. The lead vocal melody lines I compose are very important to me, the energy of a new song, and the emotions a new song has when listening to it. Those are very important to my process.

HEAVY MAKEUP: You have remained constant in songwriting, recording, and performing with no signs of slowing down. What else is in store for Jesse Damon fans?

Jesse Damon:  I am writing a book about the Silent Rage story! I plan to do something with SILENT RAGE next year. It will be the bands 30th Anniversary of our Don't Touch Me There album. This was our biggest selling and most well-known release. I hope to do some live dates with SR and maybe talk of recording something new!

Thanks so much, Lucy for all the great questions!

Rock On!

Jesse Damon Live at NAMM
What is so special about Jesse Damon is that he has never been like most hard rock musicians. Throughout the ever-changing trends of the music world, Jesse has maintained his identity. He relates to his fans on many levels. In particular, he understands them because he is such a passionate music fan himself. His love of different musical genres such as blues, hard rock, and country is evident in his songs. Growing up he took his musical inspiration from his idols of 70’s hard rock and incorporated elements of their style into his work and made it his own. Jesse’s vocal flexibility and ability to fluctuate range is remarkable. He can reach Lou Gramm’s melodic range to Roger Waters’ mid-slightly lower range, and back to hitting those aggressive high notes of hard rock effortlessly. Jesse is a musical storyteller whose vocal versatility is unrivaled. He has continued to build a solid fan base throughout his career by doing what he loves and staying true to himself, his music and his fans. Retrospective and Interview with the Monster Man, Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein

By: Lucy Hall

Doyle  Promotional Photo
In the iniquitous music business, where today’s hottest act is tomorrows' one-hit wonder, the name Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein has become something of a legend. While artists such as Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Alice Cooper, and Kiss were wearing make-up earlier than he; Doyle’s stage persona continued the tradition of theatrics not often seen in rock, which had been reserved for a very elite club of legends. Thus, Doyle seemed most likely to be the heir to the shock rock throne. The Monster-Man gained an infamous reputation and set a new standard for shock rock when he took the Misfits’ concept and amped it up. He incorporated The Misfits’ makeup and Dracula/Elvis pompadour fusion hairstyle, known as the Devilock and varied the look to a degree which made it his own trademark.
Doyle has created a persona that is not only musically exciting but visually enticing as well; which captured the morbid imaginations of punk and metal fans alike. His conceptual look along with his intimidating height and muscular physique depicts a character who could have easily stepped forth from the pages of a comic or pulp paperback. There is perhaps no other guitarist in rock music, who garners such a reaction. As a result, Doyle is widely acknowledged as the face of horror rock.

Doyle Promotional Photo
Although his image alone would have been enough to have placed him in the spotlight, Doyle also incidentally happens to be a versatile talented songwriter, who has crafted memorable hooks, and riffs earning him more notoriety. It is a rare occasion that a guitarist becomes the prominent face of a rock act; however, Doyle has maintained this position throughout his career as a member of several groups. He started his professional music career in 1980 at age sixteen, when he went from being a roadie for his brother, Jerry Only’s band The Misfits; to sharing a stage with him and Glen Danzig. Both Jerry and Glen are credited for teaching Doyle to play guitar. Having had such renowned instructors should tell you that he definitely knows his way up and down a fretboard.
As a member of the horror punk act, The Misfits, Doyle and his bandmates pushed the boundaries and went beyond the hyped up, four chord, manic tempos of the punk scene. While most bands promoted the punk rebellion of youth, the Misfits emphasized the eerie horrific side of life. Combining dark lyrics, haunting melodies, and catchy choruses earned the band an underground following. For anyone who owns a Misfits record, you know that the artwork, ghoulish lyrics, overall image and heavy tuned down music combines to invoke an atmosphere of the stark and gloomy. All are identifiable elements of a horror rock band, which made the band grow from an underground following to a worldwide national fan base, which like the Kiss Army, earned Misfits fans the title of “Misfits Fiends”.
In 83' The Misfits disbanded, and Doyle went on to play in another band with his brother, Kryst – The Conqueror. The band’s sound had more of a metal edge rather than punk. They were together from 1987-1989.
In 95' The Misfits minus Glen reformed. The band released two albums of new material until early 2000. Doyle left The Misfits to pursue other projects, which included forming the band, Gorgeous Frankenstein. At this time he ended up touring the band with Danzig. Doyle has since accompanied Danzig on stage on numerous occasions for sold out shows. He has also had several blood-soaked punk reunions with The Misfits to perform select shows. In 2016, Glenn, Jerry, and Doyle performed for the first time as the original Misfits in thirty-three years.

 Misfits Promotional Photo

Currently, Doyle continues to tour with his self-titled band. The Doyle band released their debut album, Abominator in 2013. The band’s sound is much heavier and more in the vein of metal than his previous works, consisting of both doom, and thrash metal elements.
Doyle’s signature guitar style is instantly recognizable due in part to his heavy downstrokes and aggressive power chords; and the unique sound of his Annihilator guitar. Doyle, who is a machinist knows his way around a metal shop and has used these skills throughout his musical career. He crafted his own custom-made "Annihilator" guitar. In addition, he has his own custom cabinets, pickups, signature strings, and specialized heads. In the 2000s, Doyle collaborated with Oktober Guitars to recreate the "Annihilator". He has also been endorsed by several high-quality instrument companies such as Dean Markley, Dunlop, Coffin Case and Ernie Ball.

Alex Wolfman Story and Doyle Promotional Photo
Like Kiss, The Misfits’ have a vast line of merchandise. Which includes various action figures; including figures of their mascot, the Fiend. Only a few rock stars can say they have been immortalized in an action figure. In 1999, 21st Century Toys marketed the 12’’ action figure of Doyle. In 2014, he was featured in Alan Roberts' from Life of Agony, graphic novel series Killogy. Doyle has also starred in several films and television appearances; which includes appearances in horror films and professional wrestling.

Abominator, Album Cover

I recently caught up with Doyle who is currently on tour promoting his latest album for an interview:

HEAVY MAKEUP: What is your musical inspiration? Do you write from personal experiences?

Doyle: My musical inspiration, which got me started in music, was my mom. She was a 50’s kid and had all the 45s from all the rock ‘n’ roll stars. My brother and I started listening to them as young children and just got into music that way. Then we started buying our own albums like David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Zeppelin…blah blah blah, the rest is history. So, basically, my mom did all this. I only write and arrange the music for Doyle...Alex Wolfgang Story (from Cancerslug) Doyle Vocalist, is the lyricist and vocal melody writer.

HEAVY MAKEUP: Is there a facet of the music business that you prefer? Recording, touring, or writing?

Doyle: I prefer writing because you get to create something from nothing and when you and your co-writers really like it and think it’s great…It’s a fucking great feeling. Then, I like touring...I despise recording.

HEAVY MAKEUP: The Misfits are totally hardcore punk rock. However, your self-titled band, Doyle appears more metal. Songs like, “Run for Your Life” for example sounds more like speed metal. How would you describe your own musical style? Do you think it properly fits into the spectrum of heavy metal or punk music?

Doyle: I don’t think DOYLE actually sounds like anyone…we have our own sound…we call it monster metal.  I’m more of a metal head than a punk. I just don’t have the skills of a metal guitar player…and that’s what makes me punk…but I prefer to listen to metal.

HEAVY MAKEUP: What is your favorite song to perform live?

Doyle: The last one every night…because then my workday is over…😊

HEAVY MAKEUP: You have been in two bands with your brother, The Misfits and Kryst The Conqueror. I can hardly tolerate being in the same room with my siblings for more than fifteen minutes. I have the motto, love them from afar. What was it like working musically with a family member? How did you manage to keep the sibling rivalry at bay for the sake of the bands?

Doyle: Well…we don’t actually write together. I like to write alone and then give the musical compositions to my singer to write the vocals and vocal melodies. I only play with him in the original MiSFiTS…songs that neither he nor I wrote…so basically it’s just another day at the office and we are both just performing…but I hear you…my brother is completely insane.

HEAVY MAKEUP: If you had to pick one band, song, album, video, or concert what would you be most proud of?

Doyle: I most proud of the fact that the first arena headlining gig that I was ever a part of was ever a part of was with Original Misfits…at the Los Angeles Forum sold out in under a minute…that’s pretty sick.

HEAVY MAKEUP: You have been a rock hero to several generations of fans and fiends. Who is your musical hero and what is the attraction? Have you met that person? If so, what's the best advice this person has given you?

Doyle: Alissa White-Gluz…the attraction is her insane talent, her superhero stage presence and BEAST like performances…100,000% every second of the show… and her songwriting ability of course. Her best advice wasn’t advice at all…It was an example…getting to watch her from side stage every night on a tour…watching her prepare for the show… seeing her get her game face on and never taking it off… she really is the QUEEN BEAST OF METAL.

HEAVY MAKEUP: What are you listening to now? Are you influenced at all by what is going on in music today?

Doyle: Right this second Led Zeppelin just came on my shuffle...as I read the question. Influences today for me are Arch Enemy, Slipknot, and Lamb of God. There aren't many new bands that I've heard of that do anything for me. Of course, the old classics of Black Sabbath and Pantera Etc…are always influential. But I don’t listen to a song and say I’m going to write a song like that…I just pick up the guitar and let my left hand do whatever it’s going to do comfortably without thinking about it…that’s how I write riffs.

HEAVY MAKEUP: You started playing music at a very young age. Do your children get into music? Do they play any instruments? What advice would you give a young musician?

Doyle: My children do not play music, unfortunately...I did not push it on them. I wish I would've pushed drums on my oldest son because he could've been in my band now and that was a mistake. My advice to a young musician is...don't sit in your room learning G clefs and arpeggios and all that horseshit...study and learn how to write and arrange great songs, get a great singer...and learn how to be a great performer...and fucking work out...because this is a fucking seriously a physical job...it'snot about partying...my partying is a bowl of oatmeal after the show before I go to bed.

HEAVY MAKEUP: A lot of guitarists have custom guitars. However, you literally physically built your own, "Annihilator" by hand using a design built upon as your dream guitar from a childhood drawing. Do you have to maintain those muscles in order to hold up that extremely heavy guitar? Do you credit the design for your unique sound?

Doyle: Yes, my guitars are pretty heavy in every sense of the word. I don't credit this design for my unique sound. The uniqueness of anyone's sound actually comes out of their fingers. If you gave me Eddie Van Halen's guitar with his rig...I would sound like me if I gave him my guitar with my rig he would sound like him.

HEAVY MAKEUP: Your "Devilock" hairstyle is one of your iconic trademarks. Yours differs from your brother's Devilock because the top is formed into a sort of fohawk or pompadour. Was that intentional or did it just turn out that way initially and you decided to keep the style?

Doyle: I was trying to make my hair look like the werewolf of London...and that's what I came up with...

HEAVY MAKEUP: Your fans span many generations and you have a loyal cult following, how do you feel about that? How do you think your fan base has evolved or changed throughout the years, do you feel that their energy and enthusiasm remains the same at shows?

Doyle: Our demographics for The Misfits are pretty much age five to sixty-five. Our fans are pretty diehard and are very enthusiastic about collecting merch...whatever you put out, they have to have it...they are very enthusiastic at the shows. The ORIGINAL MISFITS shows we do, you can see how happy these people are, the look on their faces...they're just not at a show going off...they're so fucking happy and they can't believe what they are looking at...it's a feeling...and I thank each and every one of them.

HEAVY MAKEUP: You are a very imitating 6’ 3” with bulging hulk muscles, and you are full of badass attitude. Yet in an interview, you publicly admitted that you cried when your rock goddess girlfriend became the lead singer of Arch Enemy. Are you secretly a sensitive guy behind that horror rock persona, or was this an isolated incident?

Doyle: Well, that was taken out of context of course…because we’ve been keeping that secret for over a year without telling anyone…and when it was finally announced, she did all her social media and then she came and on my lap, put her arms around me and we just cried of relief and happiness…very proud of her…she’s one of the best musicians ever…hands-down…!!

HEAVY MAKEUP: You appeared on a cooking show, do you enjoy cooking? Do you ever cook for your girlfriend? What is your signature vegan dish?

Doyle: I enjoy cooking with Alissa. I’ve cooked a couple things for her, not much, maybe one thing…I don’t know…but she’s the better cook. I'm more of the prep guy and the cleanup guy hahahahaha...

HEAVY MAKEUP: Concerning your talent and looks, we are all aware that you have a large female fan base. What has been the craziest thing a female fan has done to get your attention? Other, then at the Scarefest convention when I peeped through a vendor's rack of horror t-shirts next to your booth to admire your derriere and told you through the shirts you had buns of steel.

Doyle: 😮WHAAAAT?!!! The only female I remember getting my attention was Alissa WG... she stalked me like a panther when her band opened for a Danzig/Doyle tour 2013...she got me…Thank SATAN!!! 💀💀💀

HEAVY MAKEUP: I was hoping you'd say something campy and outrageous such as you got some onstage marriage proposals, had a fan that hung on a window ledge twenty feet high just to get to meet you or that you had received a fan letter written in menstruation blood. Yet, hearing that you were the prey of a badass female rock star and that she has tamed you is actually more satisfying and makes for a sweeter story.

You appear to have a lot of respect and love for animals. Do you have any pets?

Doyle: Personally no...but I share a cat with Alissa that is just so beautiful. All my family has animals...so they're all over the place.

HEAVY MAKEUP: Concerning your workout routine, how often do you work out? Do you have to do a lot of butt clenches and squats in order to maintain those buns of steel?

Doyle: I work out every day a different body part… I’m sponsored by POWER BLOCK dumbbells, we bring those on the road with us, the last thing loaded on the bus and the first thing unloaded. They supply the bench, the weights, and the stand. I do it every day…consistency… I do zero butt exercise.

HEAVY MAKEUP: You named your daughter Boriss Von Frankenstein in honor of Boris Karloff. You have referred to your sons as the sons of Frankenstein. You are obviously a Frankenstein fan. Does this mean you are a Universal Monsters fan? I am a big fan of the hyper-stylized Hammer House of Horror. What is your favorite horror studio? What is your favorite horror movie? What aspects of these attract you?

Doyle: Yes, I like Universal monster movies…I like “monster” movies…I don’t like slasher films…that’s not scary to me…I like to use the imagination while I’m watching a movie.

HEAVY MAKEUP: Did you enjoy appearing on WCW with Vampiro? Any Highlights to share? Do you still watch wrestling? Do you still follow it? What do you think about Vampiro commentating on Lucha Underground?

Doyle: Not a wrestling fan…

HEAVY MAKEUP: Have you ever had any funny mishaps or Spinal Tap type moments?

Doyle: Every day…

HEAVY MAKEUP: What can fans expect from the new album and current tour?

Doyle: To be brutalized…

HEAVY MAKEUP: You are an iconic rock star that has been immortalized through your music, image, comics and even an action figure. You have your own label, and you have even created your own brand of hot sauce. So what’s next? Any upcoming projects?

Doyle: Of course...TOP SECRET! Other than some upcoming releases on Monsterman Records/EMP Label Group. First, we have Dead Girls Corp. from Los Angeles coming out this fall and Element a440 is still working on their recording and are looking for a spring 2019 release.
